
Richard J. Kaufman is an honors graduate of Hofstra University (B.A., 1973) and Boston University School of Law (J.D. 1976) with Highest Honors in the field of Tort Law. Mr. Kaufman is admitted to practice law in the state courts of New York and Massachusetts and in the Federal Court, Eastern District of New York.
After working for the Boston firm of Gaston Snow & Ely Bartlett, Mr. Kaufman began his early career as a trial attorney, focusing on felony cases in Massachusetts. In 1978, he joined the Office of the District Attorney of Suffolk County, New York as a Senior Assistant District Attorney where he prosecuted major felonies by presentment to the grand jury and trial under the appointment of the Hon. Patrick Henry. After a brief association with the Nassau law firm of Parola, Feuerstein and Gross, Mr. Kaufman was appointed as the Confidential Law Secretary to State Supreme Court Justice Melvyn Tanenbaum (1983-1988) where he participated in the resolution of major civil issues including the Baby Jane Doe case in 1983. In 1988, he established the Law Offices of Richard J. Kaufman on Main Street in Port Jefferson, New York. He is a member of the New York State and Suffolk County Bar Associations, (Judicial Screening Committee), and a former President of the Suffolk County Criminal Bar Association (2003-2004).
While still remaining a regional general practice, the depth and breadth of experience of Mr. Kaufman and the support of well-experienced staff and affiliated counsel has allowed the practice to focus on a wide spectrum of legal matters thoroughly.
Mr. Kaufman is an experienced civil and criminal trial attorney, having handled trials in the criminal field ranging from murder, drug and white collar crimes to suspended license and speeding tickets and in the civil field from major personal injury and complex commercial litigations to probate and landlord tenant proceedings and appeals of matters to the Appellate Division and the Court of Appeals.
The practice is proud of the substantial volume of real estate matters which it handles, both residential and commercial, doing approximately 175 closings a year for individuals, businesses and banks. Because of his civil and litigation background, the practice is able to assist clients in assessing both the legal and practical consequences involved in real estate and commercial contract matters.
Mr. Kaufman has extensive experience in transactional commercial and corporation matters having represented major Long Island companies including several of the Island’s major private waste disposal firms and technology firms. The firm also practices extensively in the Surrogate’s Court having handled estate administration, kinship proceedings and probates in Suffolk, Nassau, Queens and Kings Counties.
